The reel currently has over 1.7 million views on Instagram. She effortlessly belts the famous chorus with great subtlety and control. This is before she forgets the lyrics and the video ends with a humourous sigh of disappointment. It was a beautiful short cover of Bruno Mars' famous hit "Talking to the Moon"
Truly touched by her beautiful voice it was in that moment I wondered, who is she?
I am happy to now have the opportunity to celebrate her and shine a light over her already radiant self.
Her name is MNOTHO, a 13 year old aspiring musician that has already released her first single "A Love Letter to my Mother" which is a dedication to the woman who inspires her to be her greatest self. As a young lady who doesn't like to be restricted by society's boundaries, she demonstrates her uniqueness through her music and since she is currently working on an EP we can soon expect to hear the new and distinctive sound that she is working on.
Her dedication to her growth as a musician is truly commendable and she expresses her gratitude towards all the people who have supported her on her journey thus far.
With her inquisitive nature she yearns to learn as much as possible about the world around her and she is also very passionate about expanding her knowledge on spirituality.
I was able to reach out to her for this blog interview and this is what she had to share.
Briefly share with us who Mnotho is?
Mnotho is a girl who writes, sings and produces her own music. I adore all forms of art and I admire everyone who dares to be creative.
Tell us more about your music journey.
I've been singing for basically my whole life, but I started writing when I was 8 and producing when I was 11.
Who inspires you mostly?
My mother inspires me the most because she isn't afraid to be herself and she has a great sense of style. I guess that's why I like celebrities like Rihanna and Willow Smith too.
How do you plan to use your artistry in inspiring fellow young musicians?
I plan on using my art to inspire not just young musicians but everyone and to prove that something like age shouldn't be a limitation to do what you love; whether you're young or you're old.
An artist you'd love to collaborate with?
I would really love to collaborate with either Willow Smith or Rihanna.
What do you love most about your music?
I love how unpredictable art is, you can start with one thing in mind but most of the time your work never comes out that way, it mostly ends up way better than the original idea especially when I doodle in class.
What do you hope your music could achieve?
I hope my music can be understood and loved by others as much as I do.
What does Women’s month mean to you?
To me, women's month is aknowledging the struggles women have faced, not only in the past but in the present too. Women and men are still unequal in many spaces. I have a large amount of respect for the women who stood up for their rights in events like the women's march because back then feminism wasn't as common as it is now.
MNOTHO is a rising star, one which continously breaks barriers and seeks to express her full authenticity through her art. As a creative, I am already so proud and excited to see what is next for her. At only 13 years old, she has garnered a fairly large following and will continue to inspire the next generation of young girls to always believe in their voice.
